Pueraria mirifica, also known as kwao krua is a herb found in the wild in Northeastern Thailand and Myanmar. The term pueraria mirifica was created in 1952. Today, this extract from the plant is used in making supplements.

It is a highly estrogenic herb which is used as the herbal estrogen replacement therapy. The herb has been used traditionally as a rejuvenating age and vitality enhancer particularly for the older women. The herb has been used in Thailand for several medicinal purposes, mostly as a female hormone supplement.

There have been several studies done to suggest that this herb can benefit people in a number of health conditions:

This condition normally causes a wide range of unpleasant symptoms, including night sweats and hot flashes. There was a study conducted in Thailand where a certain group of women were given the supplement for a month. At the end of this study, the subjects observed a significant decrease in hot flashes and night sweats. In fact, a good number of the women started noticing an improvement in one week. The herb also contains a compound known as miroestrol. Researchers believe that this compound is the active constituent that alleviates menopausal symptoms.

Low Libido

The herb has been shown to be effective in increasing sex drive. It can increase vaginal moisture as well.

Osteoporosis is yet another condition which is extremely common in the post-menopausal women. The condition causes bones to become brittle and weak. This in turn makes them to be more prone to breaking. The herb normally improves skeletal health which reduces the risks of osteoporosis. Researchers also believe that the phytoestrogens found in pueraria mirifica usually help in fighting osteoporosis. Taking Pueraria together with calcium, as it is recommended to help absorption, further helps in combating osteoporosis.

Pueraria is a very great choice for individuals who want to fight aging naturally. The supplement contains miroestrol and flavonoids compound which all have shown to be very effective in fighting aging. A reduction in cellulite and gray hair, increased energy, improve circulation and improved memory are some of the numerous benefits that individuals have reported after taking this herb.

Breast Enhancement

Women who are searching for an alternative solution to breast augmentation mostly turn to pueraria. One study has shown that 70%of women who use the herb usually notice an increase in the size of their breasts. In addition to increasing breast size, the herb also reduces the appearance of the stretch marks.

Improve Skin

Pueraria mirifica helps to boost collagen production and hydrate the skin. This gives a person a healthier and more youthful-looking complexion. In addition, also helps in protecting against wrinkles. There was a study that was published on the Journal of Sterility and Fertility in 2005. A group of women was requested to take the estrogen supplement while another group was given the placebo. The results of this study revealed that the women who had taken the estrogen supplement had few wrinkles as compared to the group that took placebo.

Weight Loss

The herb is also effective in reducing appetite which could help you to reach your weight loss goals.

Pueraria is commonly available in form of a liquid, powder or capsule. It can as well be applied topically. For the best results, one should take the supplement along with a beverage or food that’s high in calcium like milk, cheese, almonds and sesame seeds. This is because calcium helps in increasing absorption of the phytoestrogens, which are the major active ingredients within Pueraria and several other herbs.

Commercial manufacturers usually suggest a dosage of 250 mg (tuber or root) by mouth each morning and evening. If used for breast enlargement, the manufacturers suggest a twice-daily topical application to the breast’s area for 3-5 minutes until it’s fully absorbed.

Avoid use of this herb in case you’re hypersensitive to any of the product’s components. Due to its phytoestrogen-like effects, you should always use pueraria with a lot of caution if diagnosed with liver disease or dysfunction, pulmonary embolism, the estrogen-dependent neoplasia or even anemia.

Due to the herb’s estrogen-like effect, you should always use it with caution in patients who are suffering from asthma, diabetes mellitus, systemic lupus erythematosus, epilepsy or migraine. Also use the herb with caution in patients having hypercalcemia or abnormal triglycerides.

Even though pueraria is natural and safe, there are certain groups of people who shouldn’t take it. Pregnant women and individuals who have cancer shouldn’t take this supplement at all. Since pueraria contains the phytoestrogens, it might affect periods by delaying menstruation. Although this is thought to be very beneficial in reducing the risk of the hormone related cancers, it is still worth keeping in mind as a possible side effect which you might not be expecting.
